Site Recycle Bin in SharePoint 2010

You probably know by now that Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010 – and with that the most talked about new feature has to be the Site Recycle Bin.

We all know the horror stories from SharePoint 2007 when users would accidently delete a site and ignite a fire storm between the Farm Administrators and DBAs to get the content quickly recovered. In 2007, without having any sort of 3rd party backup/recovery tool, you would need an entire separate farm simply just to restore a database and recover the lost site. Even prior to SharePoint 2010 SP1, we had the ability to do an unattached database restore and pull out the required site. However, that process, albeit a huge leap forward, still required interaction from IT and/or DBAs.

Introducing the Site Recycle Bin!

Now, when users accidentally delete sites they can simply restore them via the Recycle Bin – as if it were merely a document!

We have (or had!) a subsite located at https://portal.contoso.com/sites/hr/benefits. Someone from HR has just deleted the Benefits subsite. Using the new Site Recycle Bin, let’s restore the site:

Click the Site Collection Recycle Bin (Site Actions > Site Settings > Recycle Bin) under Site Collection Administration:

Select “Deleted from end user Recycle Bin”

Select the checkbox next to the site to restore and click “Restore Selection” from the menu above. Once completed, navigate to the newly restore site:

Simple as that – without having to bother Farm Admins or DBAs!

  3. Finally… I think you can imagine how important the new SharePoint recycle-bin enhancement is… customers (and even colleagues) deleted sites accidentally.

We have found that if you delete the subsite using ‘Content and Structure’ the subsite does not show up in the recycle bin. Trying to find out if this is a bug or by design?
